Life, the Universe and Everything Flashcards
1
Q
what is a nebula?
A
large clouds of gas and dust in space (early nebulae = just hydrogen)
2
Q
What happens to nebulae after a while?
A
the pressure in the middle reaches a point when it is so high it will fuse
3
Q
What does this fusion result in?
A
the heat increases pressure and particles push back against the gravity pulling them in, eventually this settles into an equilibrium and a main star sequence is formed
4
Q
what is the sun?
A
a huge ball of hydrogen fused together
5
Q
What happens when stars run out of hydrogen?
A
they start to cool then swell
6
Q
What happens when after stars run out of hydrogen and cool?
A
a supernova is left as a cloud of gas and starts over with a centre of a black hole or a neutron star
