What does a motion of no confidence mean?

A

. A motion of no confidence is effectively a vote held within parliament where the House of Commons can remove a government through this vote
. An example of a vote of no confidence was when James Callaghan Labour government lost by one vote in march 1979

What does parliamentary sovereignty mean?

A

. This dictates that parliament has ultimate legislative supremacy and that parliament is the ultimate law making body within the UK.
. This effectively means that parliament can legislate on any matter of its choosing and these laws cannot be overturned by a higher authority

What is a Hereditory peer?

A

. A member of the House of Lords who has inherited that position from a family member
. The House of Lords act of 1999 stopped this and removed all but a handful of Hereditary peers from the House of Lords

A

. A life peer is a member of the House of Lords who will hold their title for life, these positions cannot be inherited due to the removal of Hereditary peers in 1999
