What is a codified constitution?
. A codified constitution is where the laws that govern a country/ are the guidelines for a country a recorded in a single document e.g. America’s constitution.
. It is very hard to get the laws in this document changed.
What is an un codified constitution?
. An un codified constitution is very similar to a codified constitution but the laws are not recorded in a single document.
. The laws in this type of constitution are. Erg easy to change.
State 2 advantages to a codified constitution
. A political issue or debate can be easily solved by referring to the constitution as the guidelines to fixing the issue may be stated In the constitution.
. Government powers would also be limited as a government can not just change the constitution to fit their needs.
Example:
. In 2015 Obama tried to pass new gun laws but was unable to as he couldn’t get the constitution changed as it stated all American citizens are entitled to carry a firearm.
State a disadvantages to a codified constitution
. Can limit a government to such an extent that they are unable to pass important laws and policies as they go against what is stated in the constitution.
State 2 advantages of an un codified constitution
. Allow governments to make quick important changes to laws and policies as the constitution can be easily amended to suit their needs/ allows governments to be flexible.
. Allows for a strong government to operate as they are able to make key decisions without being stopped by the constitution.
State a disadvantage to an uncodified constitution
. Decisions regarding the constitution may take longer to make as a single document cannot be referred to and it may take some time to find the part of the constitution that refers to what is being discussed.
