Structure of organic compounds - Part 2 Flashcards
1
Q
Difference between primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols.
A
Depends on the number of alkyl groups that bonded to a carbon atom. Primary and secondary alcohol are very reactive compared to tertiary alcohol.
2
Q
What is aldehydes?
A
There is carbonyl group (C=O) on the terminal carbon.
3
Q
What is ketone?
A
Contains a carbonyl group (C=O) at the non-terminal carbon.
4
Q
What is carboxylic acid?
A
Contains carboxyl group (-COOH) on a terminal carbon.
5
Q
What is esters?
A
Ester is formed when alcohols react with carboxylic acids. Contains COOC groups.
