Structure of Neck Flashcards
How many layers of fascia are considered superficial in the neck?
1- superfical cervical fascia
What does the neck carry?
Blood vessels
Nerves
Oesophagus and pharynx
Trachea and larynx
The neck is a ….. from the thorax to the head
conjugate/pathway
What type of connective tissue is in the superficial fascia of the neck? Where is it found?
Loose
Just below the skin
What is carried in the superficial fascia?
Fat, superficial lymph nodes, BVS (External Jugular Vein for example) and some cutaneous nerves for the neck Platysma muscle (runs from mandible inferior border to clavicle and sternum and ant chest wall.)
What is the term given to neck fascia?
Cervical fascia
How many deep layers of cervical fascia are there?
4
What type of connective tissue is present in the deep fascia?
Dense
What do you find in the pre-tracheal fascia?
Thyroid gland
Trachea (continuation of larynx from C6 onwards)
Oesophagus (continuation of the pharynx from C6 onwards)
Hyoid muscles- supra and infra
What does the carotid sheath contain?
Common carotid artery and then the internal carotid as you get higher up the neck. Internal juglar vein (more laterally) Vagus nerve (more posteriorly)
How many carotid sheaths are there in the neck?
2 (one right and one left)
What is in the prevertebral cervical fascia?
Cevrical vertebrae and the pre and para-vertebral muscles.
Where do you find the infra-hyoid muscles?
Anterior to the thyroid with in the pre-tracheal fascia in the muscular layer
What layer do you find the thyroid gland, oesophagus and trachea in?
Visceral layers of the pre-tracheal fascia
Posterior wall of the pre tracheal faschia is immediately posterior to which structure? whats is this border of fascia called and outline its course?
The oesophagus
Called the bucco-pharyngeal fascia and blends with the pericardial sack up to the skull.
The anterior wall only originates at the hyoid and runs down.
Where do sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles lie?
Investing layer of deep cervical fascia
What muscle is found superficially on the antero-latteral surface of the neck?
Platysma
What is the retropharyngeal space?
The potential space between the anterior para-vertabral fascia and the bucco-pharyngeal fascia between the two carotid sheaths.
Why is the retropharyngeal space significant?
Pathway for infection of the neck into the mediastinum and could lead to fatal mediastinhtis
