Structure Of Muscle Fibre Flashcards
1
Q
Structure of a Muscle Fibre
A
Muscle Fibre-Mycofibrils-Sacromeres (repeated contractile units)-Protein filaments (Actin and Myosin)
2
Q
What are Slow Twitch Fibres specialised for?
A
Slow sustained muscle contraction
3
Q
What are Fast Twitch Fibres specialised for?
A
Rapid intense muscle contraction
4
Q
Slow Twitch
A
- High levels of protein Mycoglobin which gives characteristic dark red pigment. Acts as an oxygen store only releasing oxygen when there are low concentrations.
- Lots of capillaries ensuring good oxygen supply
- Lots of mitochondria
- High levels of aerobic respiration enzymes
- Fatigue resistant
- Little sacroplasmic reticulum
- Low glycogen content
5
Q
Fast Twitch
A
- White muscle little myoglobin
- Little mitochondria
- Few capillaries
- High glycogen content
- Fatigue easily
- Extensive sacroplasmic reticulum
Dependence of anaerobic respiration means that rapid release of lactic acid therefore muscle fibres fatigue easily
