Structure of DNA Flashcards
Where is DNA found
In the nucleus of every cell
What are molecules of DNA made of?
Repeating units called nucleotides
What does each nucleotide consist of?
A molecule of deoxyribose sugar joined to a phosphate group and an organic base
A double strand of DNA is produced by…
Strong covalent bonds between the phosphate of one nucleotide and the sugar of the next, forming the sugar-covalent backbone of the molecule and weak hydrogen bonds between complementary base pairs
What is the base pairing rule?
A and T (Adenine and Thymine
G and C (Guanine and Cytosine)
What is the shape of the DNA molecule?
A double helix
How are the two ends of a DNA strand different?
The 3’ end (on deoxyribose) is distinct from the 5’ end (at a phosphate group)
Are the strands parallel or anti-parallel?
Anti-parallel
On what end can nucleotides be added to the DNA chain?
3’ end
