Structure of Crystals Flashcards
Smallest Structure
unit cell
Most common types of unit cells
Face-centered cubic, body-centered cubic, hexagonal close-packed
n
number of atoms per unit cell
m
adjacent unit cell number
APF
atomic packing factor//fraction of volume of cell occupied by hard spheres//sum of atomic volumes/volume of cell
Number of atoms per unit cell:
SC,BC,FC
SC: 1, BCC: 2, FCC: 4
Coordination Number:
SC, BCC, FCC
SC: 6, BCC: 8, FCC: 12
Single Crystals
whole solid is crystal
Polycrystalline Materials
many crystalline grains, not aligned, where meet is called grain boundary
Anistrophy
Different packing in different directions, deformation depends on direction stress is applied
Non-crystalline
amorphous, no long range order
Vacancy diffusion
movement to open space
Interstitial diffusion
movement between smaller spaces
homogenous material
random, routine movement, equal number of atoms in all directions
inhomogenous
moving near randomly, migration of atoms to lower concentration, can become homogenous by diffusion
