Orthopedic and Dental Implants Flashcards
Autograft
from different body part
Allograft
from different person
Xenograft
different species
Alloplast
inert metal/plastic graft
Growth Factors
substance causing proliferation
Five categories grafting materials fit in
Autograft, allograft, xenograft, alloplast, growth factor
Gold implant
1809 Maggiolo
first in US to implant platinum disc into jawbone to which porcelain/ceramic crown was fixated
1886 Edmunds
platinum post instead of gold
1887 Harris
first somewhat successful oral implant at Harvard using Co-Cr-Mo alloy in bone
1937 Strock
Implant modalities
subperiosteal, endosteal blade, ramus frame, endosteal root-form or cylindrical
Types of oral implants
endosseous, subperiosteal implants, transosseous
Endosseous implants
surgically inserted into jawbone, 90-98% success rates, average of 95%
Subperiosteal implants
lie on top of jawbone, but beneath gum tissues (no jawbone penetration)
Transosseous implants (Ramus frame, endosteal root-form/cylindrical)
surgically inserted into jawbone, penetrate entire jaw, emerge opposite entry site, works for over denture-type prosthesis
Ramus frame implant
looks like boxy C, type of transosseous
Mechanical load on native vs implanted teeth
tooth dissipate biting forces more efficiently than implant, cross-sectional surface area of implant smaller, stress on implant at angle can cause bending/torquing vectors
