Structure of Cells Flashcards
Organelle
A membrane-bound sturcture within a cell that carries out a particular function.
Haploid Nucleus
Nucelus with a half chromosome set.
Stem Cells
Undifferentiated cells that can become any type of cell.
Differentiation
A process by which cells become specialised, i.e. have a particular structure to carry out their function.
Theraputic cloning
A process where embryos are frown to produce cells with the same genes as a particular patient.
Meristems
Growth regions in plants where stem cells are produced, e.g. apical bud.
Resolution
The smallest distance between two points on a specimen that can still be told apart.
Pathogen
A harmful microorganism.
Binary Fission
Process where bacterial cells divide into two.
Colony
A large number of microorganisms (of one type) growing in a location e.g. a circular colony on the surface of agar.
