Structure of Bone Tissue Flashcards
Trabeculae
Supporting bundles of bony fibers in cancellous (spongy) bone
Osteons
Structures in bones that carry the blood supply
Lamellae
rings around the central canal, sites of lacunae
Central canal (haversian canal)
canal that houses blood vessels located at the center of the osteon
Perforating canals (Volkmann’s canals)
-connect the central canals with each other and the periosteum
-small channels in bone that transmit blood vessels from the periosteum into the bone and that communicate with the Haversian canals.
What do Perforating canals provide?
provide energy and nourishing elements for osteons
Canaliculi
Hairlike canals that connect lacunae to each other and the central canal
Lacunae
small cavities in bone that contain osteocytes
