Structure Of A Tropical Rainforest Flashcards
State characteristics of the emergent layer.
• The top layer of the rainforest.
• Trees as tall as 60 metres.
• The tree trunk has few leaves, but in the tree tops the
leaves spread out to catch the sun for photosynthesis
State characteristics of the canopy layer
• A deep layer of vegetation, 6 metres thick – forming a roof over
forest.
• The canopy blocks winds, rainfall, and sunlight, creating ahumid,
still, and dark environment below.
State characteristics of the under canopy
• Darker and more humid environment.
State characteristics of the forest floor
This area get less than 2% of the sunlight. Very little
grows here except plants adapted to very low light. Leaves
/ branches that fall from above will also lie here and
decompose quickly releasing nutrients that the trees use to
grow.
