How has vegetation adapted to survive in a Tropical Rainforest Flashcards
How did lianas adapt
Lianas are a type of climbing
vine found in rainforests.
They come in various lengths
(up to 3,000 ft).
They attach themselves to trees
with sucker roots and wind
themselves round the tree’s
trunk.
How did epiphyte adapt
An epiphyte is a plant that
grows harmlessly upon another
plant (such as a tree) and gets
its moisture and nutrients from
the air, rain.
What are Drip tips
Leaves that have a waxy surface
with pointed tips at the end to
enable excess rainwater to
run-off easily.
This is important because it
prevents the growth of algae,
which if able to grow would block
out sunlight and reduce a plants
ability to photosynthesise
How did Buttress Roots adapt
Rainforest trees have very
shallow roots.
Some very tall trees have
developed ways of getting
more support by forming
buttressed roots, which grow
out from the base of the
trunk sometimes as high as
15 ft above the ground
How does height help plants
Trees grow tall (up to 60m) to
reach sunlight.
They have large leaves to
maximise photosynthesis
