What does a simple sentence contain
A subject and a verb
What is a finite verb
A verb which is complete: it has a number, subject and tense
What is a participle
A noun or adjective that can do the job of a word. Past participles usually end in ‘ed’. Present participle usually end in ‘ing’

When ‘to’ come before a verb
What is an object
The part of a sentence that receives the verb
How do you identify the verb
By asking the question ‘who’ or ‘what’ is receiving the verb?
What are transitive verbs
Verbs that are followed by an object. The action of the verb is carried over to the object
What are intransitive verbs
Verbs that do not have an object. The action of the verb is not transferred to an object
What is a direct object
A noun or pronoun that directly receives the action of a verb
What is an indirect object
A noun or pronoun that indirectly receives an object
What is the subject complement
An adjective, noun or pronoun that follows a linking verb
What are some linking verbs
Am, is, was, were, has been, are being, mighty have been
What do complements do
They describe the injection or tell us what the subject is
