Structure Of A Leaf Flashcards
Water proof, protective layer
Waxy cuticle
Traps sunlight energy
Chloroplasts
Tubes that transport water and mineral ions from the roots to the leaves
Xylem
Tubes that transport glucose (food) from the leaves to the rest of the plant
Phloem
Allows diffusion of gases
Airspace
Like a ‘pore’. Gases diffuse in and out of the it when its open
Stoma
Can change shape to open and close the stoma
Guard cell
Bottom layer of the leaf
(Lower) epidermic cell
Contains many air spaces so that gases can in and out of the leaf.
Spongy mesophyll layer
They contain the most chloroplast. Photosynthesis occurs in these cells
Palisade mesophyll layer
Transparent layer-no chloroplasts. Allows light to enter the leaf
Upper epiderms
