Structure/ functions of neurons Flashcards
Dendrites
Receives chemical messages from other neurons
Soma (cell body)
Processes incoming signals and maintains neurons
Axon
Transmits electrical impulses away from soma
Axon terminals
Release neurotransmitters to communicate with other neurons
Myelin Sheath
Insulates axon
Increases speed of signal transmission
Synapse
Triggers the release of neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft (gap between neurons)
Neurotransmitters
Bind to receptors on the receiving neurons dendrites which allows for signal to continue
Synaptic Cleft
Separates the presynaptic neuron (the neuron sending the signal) from the postsynaptic neuron (the neuron receiving the signal).
Where chemical signaling occurs, allowing neurons to communicate with each other
