Structure/function of parts of neurons Flashcards
Dendrites
Branched extensions of a nerve cell responsible for receiving and processing signals from other neurons.
Axon
Conducts electrical impulses away from the neurons cell body, responsible for sending electrical impulses to other neurons and away from muscles and glands.
Soma/Cell body
Core of the neuron, responsible for keeping the neuron functioning and maintained.
Mylen sheath
Insulates the neuron, acts as a protective coating and allows electrical impulses to be carried quickly along the axon.
Terminal buttons
Located at the end of the neuron, responsible for sending signals onto other neurons.
Nucleus
Provides energy for the nucleus to carry out its functions.
Synapse
Gap at the end of terminal buttons.
Neurotransmitters
Responsible for carrying the signals across the synapse to other neurons.
