Narrative perspective
The person telling the story (first person/third person/omniscient narrator)
Setting
Where the action/story - setting can change
Shifts in focus
Moving our attention away from one thing to another
Shifts in perspective
Changes in points of view or what can be seen by different characters
Exterior to interior (or vice versa)
Moving from inside to outside - or from what is going on to a person’s thoughts
Dialogue
Speech. This can allow us to learn more about the characters who speak
Order of events
Sequence of what happens in the text
Foreshadowing
Hint to what might happen next
Flashback
Looking back at something which happened in the past
Zooming in
The writer narrows our focus on something to draw our attention to it
Cyclical structure
The text mentions something from the beginnig of the text again at the end
Medius res
Starting in the middle of the action
