Structure Bonding Flashcards
What is the name of the horizontal line on the periodic table?
Periods
What is the name the vertical lines on the periodic table?
Groups
What is another name for group 1 on the periodic table?
Alkali metals
What is another name for group 2 on the periodic table?
Alkali earth matals
What is the name of group 7 on the periodic table?
Halogens
What is the name for group 0 on the periodic table?
Noble gasses. They are un reactive because their atoms have a stable arrangement of electron
On the periodic table what do the small numbers show?
The number of protons which is the same as the number of electrons
On the periodic table what do the bigger numbers show?
The total mass of the nucleus (protons+neutrons)
Where are the transition metals found on the periodic table?
In the middle
Where are the metals found on the periodic table?
On the left
Where are the non-metals found on the periodic table?
On the right
How many elements are on the periodic table?
Around 100
What are compounds?
They contain two or more atoms chemically bonded together. This involves giving, taking and sharing electrons to form ions and molecules. Compounds formed from metals and non-metals consist of ions. Compounds formed from non-metals consist of molecules. In molecules the atoms are held together by covalent bonds
What is a mixture?
They are not chemically bonded together and doesn’t have to have atoms
In the name of a compound what order is the metal and non-metal?
First metal followed by. The non-metal
If a compound’s name ends in ‘ide’ what does is show?
It shows it has two elemnts
If a compound’s name ends in ‘ate’ what does is show?
It shows it was more than two elements
What is the general equation structure?
Reaction turns into product
What does ‘the mass is conserved’?
This means mass of reactants always = the mass of the products
Give two facts about an atom
You can’t destroy or create an atom except in a nuclear reaction
What are the three parts of a atom?
Protons
Electron
Neutrons
What does the number of electrons equal to?
The number of protons
Why does the number of electrons equal to the number of protons?
Because atoms are neutral
What is the relative charge of a proton?
+1 (pos)
What is the relative charge of a neutron?
0
What is the relative charge of an electron?
-1 (neg)
What is the relative mass of a proton?
1
What is the relative mass of a neutron?
1
What is the relative mass of an electron?
0
Where is the location of a proton?
Nucleus
Where is the location of a neutron?
Nucleus
Where is the location of an electron?
Outside the nucleus in an electon cloud
What is the atomic number?
It is the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
Why do all atoms of an element have the same number of protons?
Because it is unique to the element
Only that element has that number of protons
What does the atomic number also show?
He position of the element on the periodic table
What is the mass number?
It is the number of protons and neutrons In an atom
Calcium has:
Atomic number=20
Neutrons =20
How many electrons and what is its mass number
Electrons=20
Mass number=40
Sodium has:
Mass number=23
Electrons =11
How many neutrons, protons does it have and what is its atomic number
N=12
P=11
AN=11
What are all substances made out of?
Atoms
What is a substance made up of only one atom called?
An element
All atoms of a particular element have the same number of…
Protons
Element in the same group in the periodic table have the same number of…
What does this give them?
Electrons
Gives them similar properties
How can chemical reactions be represented?
Word and symbol equations
