Structure and Properties of Metallic Flashcards
1
Q
What is the structure of Metals?
A
Metal atoms are closely packed together in a very organised lattice.
Generally nuclear charge of INDIVIDUAL metal atom unable to ‘hang on’ to outer shell electrons. BUT as a team of closely packed metal cations the atoms are able to ‘hold’ onto outer shell eclectrons in what might resemble a ‘sea of delocalised electrons’. Gives impression of full outer shells.
2
Q
What is a metallic bond?
A
The strong electrostatic attractions between the metal cations and the delocalised sea of electrons are referred to as metallic bonds.
