Structure and Properties Flashcards
What are the different types of structure?
Metallic Covalent molecular Covalent network Ionic Monatomic
What does a metallic structure consist of?
A giant lattice of positively charged ions and delocalised outer electrons.
What does a covalent molecular structure consist of?
Discrete molecules held together by weak intermolecular forces.
What does a covalent network structure consist of?
A giant lattice of covalently bonded atoms.
What does an ionic structure consist of?
A giant lattice of oppositely charged ions.
What does a monatomic structure consist of?
Discrete atoms held together by Van der Waals’ forces such as Noble gases.
What is affected by an element and compound’s bonding and structure?
Their melting point, boiling point, solubility and hardness/softness.
What does hydrogen bonding between molecules in ice result in?
An expanded structure which causes the density of the ice to be less than that of water at low temperatures.
