Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What type of ions are involved in ionic bonding?
Positive and Negative.
What happens during ionic bonding?
Positive and Negative ions attract each other and then bind together to form ionic compounds.
What is each ion surrounded by?
Oppositely charged ions held in place by electrostatic attraction and forming an ionic crystal lattice.
How can the ions in a crystal lattice melted?
By a high temperature. This is because the ions in a crystal lattice are strongly bonded.
When do atoms turn into ions?
When they lose of gain electrons.
How is a positive ion formed?
When metal atoms lose electrons. This results in the atom having more protons than electrons and producing a positive ion.
How is a negative ion formed?
When non-metal atoms gain electrons and become negatively charged.
What can ionic compounds not do when they are solid?
They cannot conduct electricity. They also have high melting points.
When can ionic compounds conduct electricity?
When they are molten.
