Q

Describe the structure and the process of memory?

A
  • Information is input via our senses
  • The brain processes the information received from our senses
  • Brain stores the information by encoding the input into a memory trace which can be stored/used by the brain
  • Memory system holds the information for a few seconds or for an entire lifetime
  • Output/retrieval of memories is by a behavioral response in humans

Q

How is data stored in the short term memory (STM) ?

A
  • Data enters the short term memory store, (a temporary store that lasts for 18 seconds and holds seven items of information.)
  • STM encodes information acoustically through repetiton. By rehearsing the information, it can be stored in the STM for many minutes.

Q

Duration and capacity of the LTM store?

A
  • LTM can last for minutes or up to an entire lifetime
  • Holds unlimited amout of information
  • Encoding in the LTM is mainly semantic but can also be visual and acoustic
