Structure and Histology Flashcards
What are hepatocytes?
-liver cells
-with lots of mitochondria, large nuclei and GA = high metabolic rate
What is the branch of hepatic portal vein?
-brings blood rich in nutrients to the liver from gut
What is the branch of hepatic artery?
-brings high pressure oxygenated blood to liver
What is the role of hepatocytes?
-controls composition of blood, detoxifies and produces bile
What is the central vessel?
-takes blood to hepatic vein to be returned to circulation
What is the blood sinusoid?
-blood filled space lined with hepatocytes
What is the bile canaliculus?
-a blind ending canal into which bile is secreted by hepatocytes
Way are kupffer cells?
-in sinusoids
-engulf bacteria and damaged RBC
What is the bile ductile?
-takes bile to gall bladder for storage
-bile emulsifies fats
How is blood delivered to the liver?
-through portal vein from the digestive system
-then mixes in sinusoids
What is it important to mix the blood?
-blood delivered from hepatic artery is rich in O2
-this can mix with blood from portal vein
