Structure and functions of neurons Flashcards
AO1
the cells that make up the nervous system are called neurons. They communicate with each other using a mixture of electrical and chemical signals.
1) DENDRITES
These are where the neurotransmitter receptors are found. One the receptor and neurotransmitter bind, this causes a new electrical impulse to occur.
2) CELL BODY
Includes the nucleus which contains the genetic material of the cell
3) AXON
sends a nerve impulse through the neuron to transmit a message to the next neuron
4) MYELIN SHEATH
Protects the axon and helps speed up transmission of the message
5) NODES OF RANVIER
Speeds up the transmission of the impulse by forcing it t jump across the gaps along the axon
6) TERMINAL BUTTON
The end of the neuron and they send the information through to the next neuron through the release of the neurotransmitters.
