Functions of nose and sinuses

  • Warms and humidifies the air we breathe in
  • Collects moisture from expired air to prevent excessive water loss
  • Stiff hairs that grow at the vestibule filter large, harmful particles
  • Smaller particles are deposited on the lining of the nose
  • Epithelial lining of the nose is ciliated and mucociliary pathway clears nasal debris
  • House the olfactory receptors and olfactory epithelium

Sinuses are out-pouching of nose
Most sinuses drain into middle meatus
Eustachian tubes open into the postnasal space
