structure and function of brain Flashcards
hindbrain
located towards the back and bottom of the brain, and includes some of the brain stem, basic surival responses
cerebellum - hindbrain
responsible for co-ordination, balance and voluntary movement
medulla - hindbrain
is the point where the spinal cord meets the brain. It regulates our autonomic functions, such as breathing, heart rate, digestion and blood pressure
pons - hindbrain
responsible for sleep, dreaming, involuntary movements and respiratory system
midbrain
responsible for regulating sleep and physiological arousal and motor movements
reticular formation - midbrain
responsible for physiological arousal, alertness, sleep-wake cycle and consciousness
forebrain
regulates thinking, learning, memory, and perception, as well as various aspects of emotion and personality. This is largest most prominent part of the brain
Thalamus - forebrain
the relay centre or filtering system of the brain. regulates arousal, attention and activity.
hypothalamus - forebrain
responsible for homoeostasis, this is a biological process such as sleep cycles and hunger. With the amygdala it plays a part in our emotions.
cerebrum - forebrain
includes the cerebral cortex which is divided into the left and right hemispheres. Each hemisphere has 4 lobes. Is responsible for high order functions like language and perception
