cerebral cortex Flashcards
cerebral cortex
the thin outer layer of the cerebrum, which is divided into two hemispheres
corpus callosum
a band of nerve fibres, which allow for the transfer of information between the two hemispheres
primary motor cortex - frontal lobe
voluntary movement
Broca area - frontal lobe
speech production
prefrontal cortex - frontal lobe
high order cognitive functions eg planning, decision making
somatosensory cortex - parietal lobe
important for spatial awareness, touch, temperature, and pain are all processed here
primary auditory cortex - temporal lobe
receives sensory auditory information, then processes it to give sound meaning
Wernicke area - temporal lobe
speech comprehension
amygdala - temporal lobe
processing of fearful information. regulating emotions and remembering the emotional significance of an event
hippocampus - temporal lobe
memory formation, if damaged you are unable to from long term memories
primary visual cortex - occipital lobe
processes different types of visual stimuli
