12 bar blues
Style of blues with a 12 bar repeated chord pattern
Aria
Solo vocal piece in an opera, oratorio or a cantata. Shows the characters emotions
Binary form
Music in two distinct sections
Cadenza
Section of a piece where a soloist an really show off
Chorus
Piece in opera, oratorio or cantata sung by full chorus OR the section of a song which keeps repeating the same tune and same words
Coda
Closing section of a movement
Da capo
An instruction to repeat

Ground bass
Repeating chord pattern and bass line with a variety of things over the top
Middle eight
Eight bars in the middle of a song with different chords or a different tune to keep it interesting
Rondo
A musical form where the principle theme is repeated several times e.g. ABACA
Strophic structure
A song where there are lots of verses all sung to the same tune
Ternary form
Piece in three sections. The first and last as very similar. The middle one is a bit different and usually in a different key
Theme and variations
A theme is played followed by a variation of it, followed by another etc
