Structure and Bonding Flashcards
What does an ‘ionic bond’ mean?
Strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions.
Metals _ _ _ _ electrons to form _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ions.
lose, positive
Non metals _ _ _ _ electrons to form _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ions.
gain, negative
Postive and _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ions _ _ _ _ _ _ _ and form ionic _ _ _ _ _
negative, attract, bonds
Why do ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points?
Ionic bonds are very strong and a lot of energy is needed to break them.
Explain why ionic substances don’t conduct electricity when solid but do when melted or dissolved in water.
In a solid state the ions wont conduct because they can not move, however in a liquid state they will conduct because the ions are fee to move and act as charge carriers.
