What is the structure of the League?

A

THE ASSEMBLY
Each country had 1 vote and could recommend to the council.

                            THE COUNCIL  Met 3 times a year, or in an emergency. The five permanent members were Britain, France, Italy, Japan, and Germany (in 1926). Also had 4 temporary members.

                             SECRETARIAT Carried out the work of the League, like a civil service.

Things the League did to resolve border disputes

A

1) Åland Island dispute between Finland and Sweden in 1921 by giving them to Finland
2) Solved dispute between Germany and Poland over Upper Silesia in 1921
3) Resolved Lithuanian invasion of Memel by giving the surrounding area but making the port an “international zone” in 1923
4) Solved conflict between Greece and Bulgaria in 1925 by sending experts and fining Greece £45,000

Things the League did to improve living and working conditions

A
  • Organised shipping lanes and introduced an international highway code
  • ILO Banned white lead from being used paint
  • Helped return refugees and POW back home. 400,000 POW were successfully returned
  • Dealt with smallpox, disentry and cholera in refugee camps
  • ILO Reduced hours of work for children and recommended a 48 hour working week for adults
  • Worked to decrease the amount of cases of malaria and leprosy
  • Blacklisted 4 major companies involved in drugs trade
