Q

Arguments in defence of the League?

A

1) The USA didn’t join so Britain and France had a difficult task
2) The Depression made everything tougher worldwide
3) No one could have stopped Italy, Germany or Japan. They could have worked with the League not against it

Q

Arguments against the League?

A

1) The League should have resisted Japan in 1931
2) Too many members didn’t stick to the rules, and when attacked for it, they left: Germany and Japan in 1933, Italy in 1937
3) Britain and France didn’t lead strongly and were too slow
4) Members of the League who opposed aggression didn’t want war = kind of counter-productive
5) Ambitious leaders like Hitler weren’t dealt with harshly enough
6) It let the old system of secret alliances creep back
