Structure 1.2 The Nuclear Atom Flashcards
1
Q
Describe an atom
A
Atoms contain a positively charged, dense nucleus composed of neutrons and protons. Negatively charged electrons occupy the space outside the nucleus
2
Q
What is an isotope?
A
Atoms of the same element, with the same atomic number (same number of protons) but different mass number (different number of neutrons)
3
Q
What does a mass spectra do?
A
Determines the relative atomic masses of elements from their isotopic composition
4
Q
What are the key factors of the nucleus?
A
- Very small in comparison to the atom
- Highly dense structure containing virtually all the mass of the atom
- Positively charged
5
Q
What is the conversion factor for m to mm?
A
10^-3
6
Q
What is the conversion factor for m to μm?
