Structure 1.1 Flashcards
What are the characteristics of matter?
- Made up of particles (atoms, molecules, ions)
- Occupies a volume in space
- Has a mass
- Particles are in constant motion
What is matter
Any substance that occupies space and has mass
A pure substance
- Has a definite and uniform chemical composition
- Cannot be separated into individual parts without a chemical reaction
An element
Composed of one kind of atoms (e.g. Mg or S)
Is a pure substance
A compound
Composed of two or more kinds of atoms in a fixed ratio (e.g. MgO or H2O)
Is a pure substance
A mixture
- A combination of two or more pure substances that retain their individual properties
- Mixtures can be separated without a chemical reaction
Heterogeneous mixture
Has non-uniform composition and varying properties (e.g. sand in water)
Homogeneous mixture
Has uniform composition and properties throughout (e.g. sea water or a metal alloy)
What are the characteristics of solid particles?
- Fixed shape and volume
- Cannot be compressed
- Strong attractive forces between particles
- Particles vibrate in a fixed position
What are the characteristics of liquid particles?
- Fixed volume but no fixed shape
- Cannot be compressed
- Relatively strong attractive forces between particles
- Particles vibrate, rotate and move around
What are the characteristics of gas particles?
- No fixed volume or shape
- Can be compressed
- Negligible attractive forces between particles
- Particles vibrate and rotate faster than a liquid
