What’s a Flashback/flashforward?
Set earlier or later than the main
narrative
Links between the beginning and ending
Write about a narrative link
between the start and end of a text. You can mention things like how the characters or setting changes and talk about why / the writers intentions of that and the effect on the reader
Link between paragraphs
A recurring idea, character or
object in two or more paragraphs to emphasize the importance
Shift in focus
The change of focus in or between paragraphs
Zooming in and out
The narrowing or widening of the
narrative focus.

An advance hint of what is to come later
What’s Chronological structure?
Arranged in the order of time
What’s a Cyclical structure?
Ends where it begins / begins at the end. This is usually used by the writer to emphasize a meaning
What’s Repitition?
A word or phrase that is used more than once
What’s a Triple?
Three adjectives or phrases used to describe something
What’s Juxtoposition?
Two things placed together to highlight the
contrast between them
What’s Anaphora?
The repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses (within a few lines like a short paragraph)
What’s Listing?
A number of connected items written one after the other ( usually to emphasise a particular quality)
What’s the Exposition?
Introduction of background information on characters, events or settings to help engage the reader
What’s the Climax?
The most intense point in the development of the narrative
What’s a Simple sentence?
Contains one clause with a subject and verb (a sentence that can stand on its own)
What’s a Compound sentence?
Contains two independent clauses that
are related and joined with a conjunction (2 sentences that can stand on their own but joined together with with a conjunction like: but, yet, so, and, etc)
What’s a Complex sentence?
Contains one or more subordinate clause (a sentence that can stand on its own connected to a sentence that cannot stand on their own)
What’s an Impact sentence / Fragment?
Contains three or less words (calling it this is better than a short sentence)
