What’s a Noun?
A person, place or thing
What’s a Verb?
An action or state
What’s a Modal verb?
Verbs that indicate likelihood, ability, permission or obligation
What’s an Adverb?
A word that modifies (describes) a verb
What’s an Adjective?
Describes a noun
What’s imperative?
Gives an order or command
What’s a Pronoun?
Used in place of a noun
What’s a Superlative?
An adjective showing the highest quality or degree
What’s Symbolism?
The use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities List
What’s Aliteration?
The same letter or sound at the start of adjacent words
What’s Sibilance?
A specific form of alliteration, which focuses on ‘s’ sounds. The sounds used include ‘s’, ‘sh’, ‘c’ and ‘ch’.
What’s a Metaphor?
Direct comparison of two things without using ‘like’ or ‘as’
What’s a Simile?
Comparing two things using ‘like’ or ‘as’
What’s Personification?
The giving of human characteristics to an object. Personification is giving ANY human attribute to an object.
What’s Pathetic fallacy?
The giving of human feelings and responses to inanimate things. Pathetic fallacy is always about giving EMOTIONS to something something non-human!
What’s Onomatopoeia?
When the way the word sounds imitates the sound it is describing
What’s Emotive language?
Emotive language is when language is used to create a strong emotional response – this could be any emotion, such as anger, excitement, happiness, sadness, etc.
What’s Hyperbole?
An exaggerated statement, not meant to be taken literally, but used to create a dramatic effect.
What’s an Oxymoron?
When two contrasting ideas are combined for dramatic effect or to create a comedic effect.
What’s a Pun?
A joke which exploits the different possible meanings of a word - it makes fun of the fact that there are other words which sound the same but have different meanings.
What’s Direct address?
Talking directly to the audience
What’s Imagery?
Vivid description of a particular scene. If you use the specific type then you’ll get higher marks.
What’s Auditory imagery?
Vivid description of sounds
What’s Tactile imagery?
Vivid description of physical sensation
What’s Olfactory imagery?
Vivid description of smell
What’s Gustatory imagery?
Vivid description of taste / flavour
What’s Kinesthetic imagery?
Vivid description of movement or body
