What is a Flashback?
Going back in time
What is Foreshadowing?
The writer giving clues to the reader about something that’s going to happen in the future
What is Zooming in?
When writers focus on particular details?
- to show importance
What is Zooming out?
Used for the setting
What is Dialogue?
When characters are talking
- breaks up the narrative, gives details
What is New Character/ New Setting?
Introduction of a character or setting
What is a change in tone?
A change in the attitude a writer conveys towards something
- focus on the cause of this change
What is Long/ Short Sentence?
Short - used to build tension, make the action seem alive
Long - used for detail, slow down the narrative
What is Long/ Short paragraph?
Short - stand out on the page
Long - also stands out
What is a Shift in focus?
Change in what’s being spoken about without zooming in or out
- common in setting descriptions
What is a Cyclical Structure?
Starting and ending similarly, referring to the opening at the end
What is Juxtaposition?
- effect and location of contrast, and reasons
What is an Extended Metaphor?
An explained metaphor
- emphasis on the comparison
What is Pace?
Created through variation in sentences/ paragraphs, Zooming in/ out etc.
How slow/ quick the narrative is moving
What is a List?
Anything more than three
