What is Pathetic Fallacy?
Using the weather/ atmosphere (e.g. dark night- evil and nasty atmosphere) to describe the mood
What is Personification?
A non-human given human qualities
e.g. the pen sat on the table
What is a Simile?
Comparing two things using like or as
e.g. we ate like a pack of hyenas
What is a Metaphor?
Comparing two thins using is or are
e.g. they are dragons
What is an Extended Metaphor?
A metaphor that has been developed in great detail
- basically an explained metaphor
e.g. life is a rollercoaster, you can never prepare for the ups and downs it brings
What is an Oxymoron?
Having two opposite words side-by-side
e.g. soft diamond
What is Juxtaposition?
Two opposing ideas
- kind of an explained oxymoron
e.g.
What is Symbolism?
When an object is used to present meaning
e.g. dagger = death
What is Semantic Field?
When words across an extract can be linked to one idea
e.g. spells, staff, magic, pointy hat - wizard
What is Irony?
An expression in text which signifies opposite meaning
- something unexpected
What is a Rhetorical Question?
A question that does not require an answer
e.g. Have you gotten a 9 in English yet?
What is a Hyperbole?
When you overexaggerate something
e.g. If I get another 6 I will fling myself off of that weird tower worth the coastal defences
What is Assonance?
Repetition of a vowel sound
e.g. I am tOO cOOl fOr schOOl
What is Alliteration?
When words in a row begin with the same letter
e.g. a giant green gnome
What is Sibilance
When words in a row begin with ‘s’ or have an ‘s’ sound
e.g. She waS Slowly hiSSing
