Structural Brain Imagery Flashcards
What are the different types of Brain Imagery?
- Still Images
- Dynamic Images
- Brain Injured People
- Brain Wave Activity
What is a CT scans official name?
Computerised Axial Tomography Scan
What is a CT scan?
A CT scan is an x-ray procedure that creates cross sectional images with the help of computer processing. CT images can reveal the structure of bone and soft tissue organs.
What is a MRI scans official name?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
What is a MRI?
Uses strong magnetic field and radio frequency pulses to produce 3D images of the brain from which 2D slices can be displayed to show brain structures.
What is a FMRI scans official name?
Functional Magnetic Resonance System
What is a FMRI?
FMRI measures activity in the brain where neurons consume oxygen and displays this in a coloured image - higher levels of oxygen indicate higher level of brain activity. FMRI used in research to show specific brain areas activated when completing specific tasks.
What is an EEGs official name?
Electroencephalography
Who was Roger Sperry and what did he discover?
Roger Sperry is a neuroscientist who studied patients who had split brain surgery (1959 – 1968). He performed experiments on cats, monkeys, and humans to study functional differences between the two hemispheres of the brain. Sperry used adeviseto present visual information to one hemisphere or the other in isolation.
Who was Phineas Gage and what did he discover?
Phineas Gage is a famous brain-injury survivor who enabled scientists to increase their understanding of the functions of the prefrontal cortex of the frontal lobe of the cerebrum. In 1848, while working as a railroad construction worker Gage’s head was impaled by an iron bar, which ripped through his skull and the front of his brain.
*The injury changed his behaviour and personality, he became argumentative and angry and knew no social inhibitions.
*Provided the first evidence that the prefrontal cortex was involved in personality and regulation of behaviour.
What is an EEG?
An EEG measures whole brain electrical activity. The EEG records changes in the amplitude and frequency of brainwaves by placing electrodes externally on the scalp.
