Strong and weak acids and bases Flashcards
Define Bronsted Lowry bases and acids
Acid: donates a H plus ion, or proton
Base: Receives proton
Define Lewis acid and bases
Acid: Receives electron pair
Base: donates electron pair
Think of Lewis bond
What is Kw and how do you calculate it?
The equilibrium constant at a certain temperature. It is calculated by the conc of H plus multiplied by the conc of OH minus(both in Mol/dm cubed
What is the pH scale
A measure of number of H plus ions in a thing:
pH=-log(conc of H plus)
Define electrolytes
A substance that dissolves in water to produce ions(and thus conduct)
Difference between strong, concentrated and corrosive
strong: Completely disassociated into ions
Concentrated: High number of moles per dm cubed
Corrosive: Chemically reactive
Colour of Phenolphalein and Methyl orange across pH
Phenol: colourless in acidic, pink in basic
Methyl: Red in acid, yellow in base
Acid plus hydroxide reacts to produce?
Salt and water
Acid plus metal oxides react to become?
Salts and water
Acid with ammonia reacts to become?
salt
Acids and reactive metals react to become?
Salt, and hydrogen(and water in solution)
What is a test of acid using reactions?
React with carbonate: produces salt, CO2 and water
React with hydrogen carbonate: produces salt, Co2 and water
What is a conjugate acid-base pair?
A pair of species that differ by one H plus ion
