Strong Acids and Bases Flashcards
(8 cards)
1
Q
What does pH tell us?
A
The power of hydrogen ions
2
Q
How do we calculate pH
A
pH = -log [H+]
3
Q
What does diprotic acid mean?
A
An acid which loses 2 protons (like sulfuric acid)
4
Q
What is a strong acid or base?
A
One that completely dissociates in water
5
Q
When can an acid act as a base?
A
When it reacts with an even stronger acid.
e.g. HNO3 and H2SO4
HNO3 will become protonated to form H2NO3 to act as a base
6
Q
How would we calculate the pH of a strong base
A
Use the ionic product of water equation:
Kw = [H+][OH-] = 1x10^-14
7
Q
How do we measure pH in the lab?
A
With unviersal indicator or a pH meter
8
Q
A
