Stroke/TIA Flashcards
Stroke
Cerebrovascular disorder of sudden onset
Results in death of brain tissue
Cause of stroke
Cerebral hemorrhages, bursting of aneurysms
Types of stroke
Ischemic
Hemorrhagic
Ischemic stroke
Area deprived of blood because of obstruction
Most common (around 85%)
Thrombosis or embolus to artery
Thrombus
Blood clot that forms within the blood vessel
Embolus
Material floats from another part of vascular region
Factors that contribute to blockage
Atherosclerosis
Arteriosclerosis
Atherosclerosis
Narrowing artery from plaque buildup
Arteriosclerosis
Stiffening/hardening of artery walls
Hemorrhagic stroke
Weakened vessel wall ruptures, causing bleeding in the brain
Around 15% of all strokes
35-52% of all patients die within first 30 days
Locations of hemorrhagic stroke
Intracranial
Intraventricular
Intracerebral/intrapharenchymal
Intracranial
Bleed under the skull, often due to trauma
Intraventricular
Bleed in ventricular system
Intracerebral/intraparenchymal
Bleed in blood tissue
About 2/3 of hemorrhagic strokes
Non-traumatic
General stroke symptoms
Sudden onset:
Limb weakness in one side of the body
Numbness/tingling of the face or limbs on one side of the body
Confusion, trouble speaking or comprehending speech
Walking, loss of balance, disco ordination, vertigo
Vision problems in one or both eyes
Severe headache with no known cause
