what is a hemorrhagic stroke?
a hemorrhagic stroke is a ruptured artery or aneurysm–> bleeding in the brain
what medication can be given to treat an embolic stroke?
give alteplase within 4 an a half hours . If the medication is given after this time, it will literally blow a hole in the brain
what are risk factors for stroke?
Afib and hypertension
what are clinical manifestations of left sided stroke?
- aphasia
- agnosia
- alexia
- agraphia
- anhedonia
- right extremity paralysis or weakness
what is aphasia?
inability to speak or understand language
what is agnosia?
inability to recognize objects
what is alexia?
difficulty writing
what are clinical manifestations of right sided stroke?
- overestimation of abilities
- unilateral neglect
- visual changes
- poor impulse control and judgement
- weakness or paralysis of left side
what diagnostic test must be done if a patient is suspected of having a stroke?
CT scan to assess for brain bleed. if not present, assume ischemic stroke and give alteplase. if present, assume hemorrhagic stroke and prepare patient for a craniotomy
