Neurogenic Shock Flashcards
when does neurogenic shock occur?
within 24 hours of a spinal cord injury
what is neurogenic shock?
total loss of communication within the SNS–> vasodilation
what are clinical manifestations of neurogenic shock?
EVERYTHING DECREASES
- BP, HR, CO, SVR, and CVP all decrease
- dependent edema
- loss of temperature regulation (poikilothermia)
what are priority interventions for a patient with neurogenic shock?
- lay flat for the hypotension
2. prevent DVT because the blood pools in the lower extremities which causes that dependent edema
what medications can be given to help treat neurogenic shock?
IV fluids can be given and then vasopressors/atropine to speed up the heart
what complication can occur from neurogenic shock?
bad orthostatic hypotension can occur so transfer in stages, raise HOB but be ready to lower if patient gets dizzy
how can a nurse transfer into reclining wheelchair?
be ready to lock and lean the wheelchair back to fully reclining position if patient reports dizziness, DO NOT put the patient back in bed
