Stroke Flashcards
stroke
def and types
neurological deficit attributed to an acute focal injury of the CNS by a vascular cause
ischemic stroke: clot in blood vessel blocks flow to area of brain
hemorrhagic stroke: broken blood vessel, bleeding into brain tissue
subarachnoid hemorrhage
stroke signs
sudden onset usually vascular
right sided weakness means left side of brain involved and vice versa
anarthria: speech
cortical spinal tract involved- paralysis
left gaze means left side affected
aetiology
virchow’s triad
1
reduced blood flow:
atrial fibrillation
immobility
varicose veins
pregnancy
2
blood vessel injury
trauma
hypertension
surgery
3
increased coagulability
sepsis
smoking
coagulation disorders
malignancy
acute brain imaging CT
white means clot
treatment for stroke
endovascular thrombectomy
if treated in time
then
thrombolysis
TPA thrombolytic agent
breaks clot to plasmin
2nd has risks:
fatal bleeding
TPA too late, brain liquefied/died
antiplatelets and high dose statins
eg. aspirin post stroke
long term
speech and language therapists
occupational therapists
physiotherapists
