What is a stroke?
Sudden neurological disturbance due to blockage/ruputure of a blood vessel within the brain.
Two types of stroke classifications
Isachaemic (85%)
Haemorrhagic (20%)
What is a an Ischaemic stroke
Area of brain deprived of blood
Obstruction blocks the flow to part of the brain
Severe hypotension
Neurological deficit less that 24 hrs
What is a hemorrhagic stroke?
Weakened vessel walls rupturing causing bleeding into the brain.
Area of bleeding - intracerebral bleed
Risk factors for stroke
>60 years of age Diabetes Cardiac disease Smoking oral contraceptive hypertension etc....
What medication will stroke patients most likely be taking
Anti-coagulated or anti-platelet
Which increases their risk of bleeding
What may be affected to neglect the patients OH?
Due to weakness facial area and being paralysed
What is affected in most patients who suffer with a stroke
Dysphagia - difficulty in swallowing and cause stasis of saliva and food in the oral cavity.
Communication - speech can be affected
