Q

Explain the stretch-shortening cycle and its importance?

A

Stretching of upper-body muscles in the backswing creates a ‘stretch’ (eccentric loading) of important muscles

  • In golf, the rate of stretch is increased in professional players (greater angular displacement in shorter time)
  • Increasing torso-pelvic separation in the backswing enhances this stretch
  • To maximise the effect, movement of hips towards the target needed first in downswing
