stretching techniques Flashcards
1
Q
what is static stretching
A
- stretching a muscle to its farthest point or limit and then maintaining that position for 15-20 seconds
- very safe and effective.
2
Q
what is proprioceptive neruromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching
A
- combination of static and isometric stretching and work to get new length of muscle.
- contraction against a resistance.
- results in increased range of motion
- usually requires a partner
- good for rehabilitation
- stretches further than static
- minimal risk of injury
3
Q
what is Dynamic stretching
A
- movement of the body to lengthen the muscle
- controlled movement
- doesn’t force the muscle beyond normal range of motion
4
Q
what is ballistic stretching
A
- body movement stretch that forces muscles further than there normal range of motion.
- bouncing is commonly used
- very high chance of injury
- replicates movement required for their sacrifice activity
5
Q
explain the purpose of stretching
A
- increases flexibility
- when muscle stretched , receptors in the muscles called muscle spindles are stimulated. these record change in length and send a muscle to the brain and reacts according ( over stretching for example a pain message is sent saying that is bad mmk)
