Stretching Flashcards
What are the 5 most important areas of flexibility for a dancer?
- Lumbar back extension
- turn out
- knee extension
- point position
- the ability to bend the big toe backward
What is an antagonist (in stretching)?
The muscle that pulls against the stretched muscle.
Improved flexibility comes from stretching the…
Connective tissue.
What is the stretch reflex?
When the muscle spindle is stimulated by a sudden stretch causing the muscle to contract. Little flexibility is gained.
What is the agonist (in stretching)?
The muscle being stretched.
What is an elastic stretch?
Temporary increase in muscle length.
What is a plastic stretch?
More permanent increase in muscle length that remains after tension is removed.
What is static stretching?
Slowly moving a joint to the end of its range position and holding for 30-60 seconds.
What is ballistic stretching?
Quickly moving a joint to the end of its range position using bouncing movements.
When in a dance class does stretching have the most benefit?
At the end of class (because the body is very warm).
