Stress Concentrations and Design Stratagies Flashcards

1
Q

How do you get stress concentrations and what are stress raisers

A

Components have discontinuities such as changes in section steps keyways, notches and holes
When stress is acting near these areas it will be more there than anywhere else. These areas and discontinuities are called stress raisers

Q

What are the 5 main design strategies for countering stress concentration

A

G.E.K.S.H

•Shoulders: Large fillet radius, Stress relieving groove, Undercut round fillets, holes, grooves

•Holes: Additional stress relieving
holes, Stress relieving grooves

  • Grooves: Additional stress relieving grooves
  • End of bore close to shoulder: Stop well before the shoulder, Undercut fillet the shoulder

•Keyway runs into shoulder fillet: Move away from shoulder and round
corners added to the keyway, Undercut fillet added to the shoulder
